Living in Penacova for over a week, participants in the PLAY GROUND wood self-construction workshop developed proposals of public space interventions for Largo Alberto Leitão, the Pergola at Piscinas Municipais, the entrance to Parque Verde António Manuel Marques, and Praia Fluvial da Ponte. The work was developed in an initial phase of discussion and presentation of ideas at Casa das Artes Martins da Costa, with the presence of João Gomes (ESAD-Matosinhos) and critical commentary by Stephen Slaughter (School of Architecture-Pratt Institute). The construction of the pieces was carried out with the technical collaboration of Móveis Viseu and the logistical and material support of the Penacova Parish Council.

INTERVENTION AT PONTE RIVER BEACH

The vertigo of the green mountains and the serene speed of the cold river waters reveal a unique context. The topographic profile is steep and almost symmetrical, with the Mondego at its center, once a place for the transport of people and rare goods. The barcas serranas (traditional boats) that rest there tell us stories from long ago. Today it is a place of pleasure.
At Praia Fluvial da Ponte, the sounds of the mountain, the texture of the river, and the color of the earth converge, along with the stories we project. Memories are added to the senses. With sixty pine beams and thirteen OSB panels, new perspectives are sought and relationships that do not exist are established. The composition of the structure, both spatial and formal, offers new meanings to the landscape. It filters and frames it. Light and shadows draw other geometries, and the sandy ground welcomes them. We are one of its inhabitants. We imagine that other beings make this structure their home. The Mondego can also welcome it as its own...
